Your summer workouts went great. You and your staff were excited about new approaches to your offensive and defensive systems. The practices leading up to your first game solidified your optimism for the upcoming season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the games began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a team struggles, the coach faces a decision. The offense isn’t producing. Players keep making the same mistakes. Losses accumulate, and the whispers become louder. Something needs attention, and the coach has to determine where to start.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience helps, but so does having a process for evaluating problems. A coach who reacts to every setback risks creating confusion. A coach who refuses to reconsider an approach can spend a season fighting the same problems as losses mount and player morale declines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When tactics aren’t working, there are three possible responses: stay the course, make a correction or change direction. The right decision starts with understanding the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Stay the Course<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes your offensive or defensive approach is sound, but the execution needs work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider a team that struggles to run its half-court offense. The coach watches film and sees players missing reads, setting poor screens and losing their spacing. The offense produces inconsistent results, so the coach considers installing a new system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A closer look suggests the players need more teaching, clarity <\/a>and<\/a> repetition<\/a>. They haven’t developed the understanding required to execute the offense consistently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing systems introduces another set of concepts for the players to learn. The coach is learning the new system, too, and will have to work through that process alongside the team. Valuable practice time gets diverted, and the original problems may follow the players into the new offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before making a change, ask yourself: Have we given this approach enough time to work? Do the players understand what we’re asking them to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the approach fits your personnel and the problems stem from execution, stay the course. Identify the mistakes, teach the necessary skills and give players opportunities to improve. Bring clarity and repetition to practice while holding players accountable for their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patience has a place in coaching. So does a bit of stubbornness, provided you have a clear idea of what you’re waiting for and can see the team making progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Make a Correction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the overall approach works, but a specific detail limits its effectiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine a team that generates good shots from its half-court offense against most opponents. Against teams that switch screens, however, the offense struggles. Players hesitate, possessions devolve into isolation basketball and effective field goal percentage drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The team may need better counters against switching defenses. Players might need clearer instructions about when to slip a screen, or the coach may want to add an option that addresses the coverage. The existing offense can remain intact while the team works on that weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask yourself: Can I identify a specific problem that explains what’s going wrong? If I address it, will our offense become more effective?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

An adjustment needs a clear purpose. In this example, the coach should know what to look for: Are players recognizing the switches and exploiting the advantages created by mismatches?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the correction focused. Give players practice reps, then return to the film and stat sheets to evaluate the results. If the adjustment solves the problem, the team can continue building within its existing approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Change Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are situations in which the underlying approach deserves another look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A coach may want to play at a fast tempo in transition<\/a>, for example, but the roster struggles with frequent live-ball turnovers<\/a>. The team also lacks the depth to sustain that style for long stretches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional practice can improve execution. The coach still needs to consider whether the preferred style suits the personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That requires an honest evaluation of the team’s strengths and limitations. A different pace might give the players a better chance to succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask yourself: If we executed this approach well, would it solve the problem? Does the strategy fit the players we have and the demands of our competition?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the approach creates a fundamental mismatch with the roster, a larger change may be necessary. That decision could involve overhauling your game model<\/a>, a new practice structure or the assumptions behind preparation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coaches develop philosophies through experience. Those philosophies guide decisions, and they continue to evolve as the coach learns more about the team and the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Practical Test Before You Adjust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a problem arises, work through these questions with your coaching staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the underlying approach sound?<\/strong> If it fits your team and the players are still learning to execute it, stay the course. Focus on teaching and give the process the practice time it needs. Hold players accountable for their assignments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you isolate a specific problem?<\/strong> If a particular detail is undermining an otherwise sound approach, make a targeted correction. Define what you expect to improve and look for evidence that the change worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Would better execution solve the problem?<\/strong> If the answer is no, examine the strategy itself. Consider whether it fits your personnel and the demands of the situation. You may need to change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After making a decision, evaluate the results. Did the change address the problem? Have the players had enough time to apply it? Those answers will help determine your next move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The process continues throughout a season. An opponent may expose a weakness that requires another adjustment. A team that struggles early may begin to execute its original approach after more practice, film review and skill development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
